The nor'easter upending travel plans along the East Coast will
cost airlines about $10 million, according to an estimate issued
Tuesday by masFlight, an aviation analysis firm that is part of
Mark Systems Inc. of Bethesda, Md.
The firm attributed 7,800 flight cancellations to the storm,
with more than 30% occurring at the three major New York airports.
Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Chicago were the other
top cities for cancellations, masFlight said.
Still, illustrating that January can generally be a rocky time
for a plane trip, masFlight said the scope of the cancellations
from the nor'easter--dubbed "Juno" by The Weather Channel--doesn't
compare with flight snafus the same time last year.
"January 2015 winter weather conditions are running 66% below
2014 and are actually more typical of January winter weather
cancellations," masFlight said.
The firm's analysis said airlines had accounted for most of the
costs of the latest round of canceled flights in financial
projections. "We do not expect that Juno will have a material
impact on airline financial performance for 1Q," masFlight
said.
