Mount Everest Commemorative Poster Released by the Himalayan Stove Project, Just in Time for a Holiday Gift

TAOS, N.M., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The poster was created to honor the 50th Anniversary of the first five American mountaineers to reach the Everest's summit in May 1963, and the entire expedition that supported that historic effort.

The poster, created by artist Elizabeth Mercuri, is being released in a numbered, Limited First Edition of only 250, and is available exclusively on the website of the Himalayan Stove Project http://www.himalayanstoveproject.org. The poster was a collaborative effort by the Himalayan Stove Project and Jack Leustig Imaging of Taos, New Mexico.

"We felt that commemorating the achievement of these pioneering mountaineers was the right thing to do. What they accomplished 50 years ago set a standard of excellence and teamwork that should make every American proud. Mount Everest is an enormous mountaineering challenge today. It's almost inconceivable that they were so successful a half a century ago," said George Basch, "Chief Cook" of the Himalayan Stove Project. "The poster is absolutely gorgeous and would be a terrific holiday gift for anyone with even the slightest passion for mountaineering and mountaineering history."

The creation of the poster was sponsored, funded and supported by:

  • Eddie Bauer, the lead sponsor. Eddie Bauer has been a committed partner to the American mountaineering and exploration community since the 1920's through to the present day. Since its inception, the company has outfitted many exploration firsts, including both the first American ascent and the first ascent via the West Ridge of Mt. Everest in 1963.
  • adidas Outdoor sports. For over 80 years the adidas Group has been part of the world of sports on every level. A multinational, multisport, firm, they are committed supporters of environmental causes. Reinhold Messner, an adidas spokesman, is renowned for having made the first ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen, and also the first solo ascent. He is, personally, a supporter of the Himalayan Stove Project.
  • MSR (Mountain Safety Research), the Seattle-based manufacturer of high-performance outdoor equipment, has been engineering standard-setting gear since 1969.  MSR's commitment to quality manufacturing and innovation ensures outdoor enthusiasts are equipped with only the best in stoves, fuel, cookware, water treatment, shelters, trekking poles, snowshoes and alpine equipment.
  • Kahtoola (which means "directly" in Tibetan) is a wonderful, imaginative, energetic, company in Flagstaff Arizona that manufactures and distributes, globally, a unique line of patented snow and ice travel equipment, including crampons and snowshoes. They are a founding member of "1% for the People," and have become a sponsor of the Himalayan Stove Project through that philanthropic initiative.
  • Rotary International, a dynamic force in the global philanthropic community supports the project through the Rotary Club of Taos New Mexico, which is "Chief Cook's" home club. Rotary Taos is developing a support program with other US Rotary Clubs, and with Rotary Clubs in Nepal.
  • Outside Magazine, Rock and Ice, The Adventure Blog and Expedition News are providing media support.

Additional supporters of the commemorative poster, and of the work and mission of the Himalayan Stove Project overall, include the American Alpine Club, 1% for The Planet, The Mayo Clinic, the Halton Foundation, Patagonia, Petzl, Sherpa Adventure Gear, Keen, Vibram, Big Agnes, Sole, Global Rescue, Kobold Expedition Watches, Glacier Works and Taos Ski Valley.

Tom Hornbein, one of the five Americans who summited Mount Everest on the historic expedition in May 1963, serves on the Board of Advisors of the Himalayan Stove Project. Two other outstanding U.S. Everest summiteers, Erik Weihenmayer and Jeff Evans, and two illustrious British mountaineers who have also stood on Everest's summit; Chris Bonington and Doug Scott; round out the mountaineering members of the Himalayan Stove Project's powerful and experienced advisory board.

The Himalayan Stove Project is supported by numerous other eminent Himalayan mountaineers, including Reinhold Messner, Conrad Anker, Dave Hahn, Jimmy Chin, Charley Mace, Carlos Buhler, Simone Moro, Phil Powers, Mark Richey, Steve Swenson, Sandy Hill, Rebecca Stevens, Sherman Bull, Brad Bull, Chris Morris, Michael Brown, Doug Beall, and many, many others.
