INDIANAPOLIS,
Aug. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A new
survey finds that for 96 percent of parents of children with Type 1
diabetes in the U.S., diabetes management is a constant
worry.I But often, "worry" is an understatement. Parents
experience tension headaches (54%), anxiety attacks (40%), lack of
concentration at work (37%), and losing their temper (32%) due to
stress related to managing their child's Type 1 diabetes. Yet,
9 out of 10 worried parents agree it would help alleviate their
worries if they could remotely check their child's glucose levels
when they are not physically together.I Today,
Roche Diabetes Care, a company committed to advancing technology
that empowers people with diabetes to focus on the daily wins of
managing diabetes, introduces the new Accu-Chek® Connect system.
The Accu-Chek Connect system is designed to simplify diabetes
management and offer peace of mind to parents and caregivers, and a
newfound sense of independence to children living with
diabetes.

The Accu-Chek Connect system is a diabetes management system
that consists of the Accu‑Chek Aviva Connect meter, an app
(available on Android and iOS), and an online portal that allows
children, caregivers, and healthcare providers to view, share, and
access blood glucose data anytime, anywhere. In addition, a doctor
can activate an insulin calculator on the app, the Accu-Chek Bolus
Advisor, which makes it easy to calculate how much insulin is
needed at each meal.ll The Accu-Chek Connect app is the
first FDA-cleared app with a built-in prescription insulin
calculator for use on iPhone and Android smartphones or tablets.
The simple-to-use meter wirelessly sends blood glucose results to
the Accu-Chek Connect app on a smartphone. Results can then be sent
through auto-generated texts to parents and caregivers, and the
child's healthcare team to help keep them up to date and so they
can provide guidance as needed.*
"Even after two years, it's still a constant worry when my son
is off at school or out of my care. Did he check his blood sugar?
What is his blood sugar? Did he take his shot? Did he count his
carbs? And I can't always be there to check him," said Lisa Oberndorfer, whose 15-year-old son, Will,
is living with Type 1 diabetes. "The availability of a diabetes
management system that allows me to be connected and see my son's
blood sugar levels and how he's tracking from my phone virtually
anywhere – without constantly calling and texting my son – would
certainly put my mind at ease."
The survey also uncovered how parents have adapted their
parenting style because of their child's diabetes and the impact
they believe living with diabetes has on their children,
including:
- 96 percent of parents have adapted their parenting style
I
- The top changes they've made include becoming more
overprotective (28%) and more involved (35%) I
- 8 out of 10 parents of children with Type 1 diabetes admit to
acting like a "helicopter parent" because of their child's Type 1
diabetes (81%) I
- Parents admit that when they acted like a "helicopter parent"
their child has become angry with them (51%), avoided them (38%),
and started misbehaving or acting out (34%) I
- According to a 2013 study, "helicopter parenting" can be
associated with higher levels of child anxiety and depression
Ill
- 96 percent of parents think it would help alleviate their
worries if they could remotely check their child's glucose levels
when they are not physically together I
"Accu-Chek Connect is game-changing technology for the diabetes
community and underscores Roche's commitment to innovation," said
Marc Gibeley, Head of Roche Diabetes
Care North America. "While anyone with diabetes can use the
Accu-Chek Aviva Connect meter and full Accu-Chek Connect system,
parents of children with diabetes may find the system especially
beneficial because it allows them to access their child's blood
glucose results, even when the child isn't with them."
To illustrate the emotional impact of the disease, Roche
Diabetes Care has released a series of new videos featuring the
personal stories of families living with Type 1 diabetes. The
videos provide a snapshot into each family's diabetes journey and
prove that Type 1 diabetes doesn't define a person. To see the
